About our blog

This blog began as an attempt to keep our family and friends included in the adventures of little Baby Blakely until he made his appearance in the world. Now, this has become a gathering place for all of our various adventures as we continue to enjoy time as a growing family.

Toddlerhood

I'm sorry...who stole my baby and replaced him with a toddler?  I apologize for the lack of posts here lately.  Things have been a little crazy in the Blakely household.  So I will try my best to catch you up.

Ear Infections
The world of ear infections hit us at 9 months.  For a little boy who had nothing more than a cold for the first nine months of his life, this first ear infection was HORRIBLE!  And to top it off, it was paired with pink eye.  Our normally sweet happy boy had gunky eyes and a fever and was feeling downright miserable.  Josh was flying out that day for a conference...his first time going out of town for any extended period of time since Noah was born.  I picked up Noah from daycare with his eyes almost glued shut and by the time we got home he was burning up.  I took his temperature and it had risen to over 103!  I freaked.  It was about 15 minutes until 5 but the doctor's office wouldn't pick up the phone.  I called Josh crying.  I finally found the number to the hospital line to page the doctor who thankfully called me back within about 5 minutes.  He told me it sounded like Noah had an ear infection and pink eye and to give him tylenol for the fever and bring him in first thing in the morning unless the fever gets worse in which we would need to go to the ER.  Josh was ready to change his flight and come home but I insisted that things would be fine and to go ahead to his conference.  Baby and I spent the night cuddling on the couch as he whimpered off and on the whole night. (Miraculously, I did not get pink eye.)  It was so sad and pitiful and it hurt me so much to see him feeling so horribly.

Cue present day and we are on ear infection NUMBER FIVE!  It's been a ridiculous 2.5 months.  We finish a round of antibiotics and a few days later, Noah is pulling on his ears again.  It seems that nothing has truly cleared it completely so he's basically been living with a double ear infection this whole time, poor guy.  And to top it off, despite our best efforts with pumping the yogurt into him, being on antibiotics so much has messed with his bacteria levels which gave him a horrible case of diaper rash yeast infection and just last night I discovered thrush.

So last week N's doctor referred us to Virginia ENT in Richmond to discuss next steps.  Our appointment was today and the doctor recommended tubes.  It seems that N's ears just aren't draining well which is what is causing all the infections.  We will hear back from the ENT tomorrow about timing for the surgery, but it will be this week.  They tell us it's a simple surgery that only takes about ten minutes, but he does have to be put to sleep for it.  I'm sure everything will be fine, but it still makes me nervous.  We are really hoping this will clear up these infections, though.  We hate that he's had to be on so many antibiotics so frequently.  So pray for us this week!!

New Tricks
Wow!  Like I said, where did my baby go?  Noah is sitting, standing, crawling, climbing and walking with anything he can make into a walker (ottoman, laundry basket, kitchen chair)!  He takes a couple steps on his own, but uses his walker to make laps and laps around the house (Noah's walker).  It's hilarious.  He's gotten really good at manipulating it to go in whatever direction he wants.  It won't be long now until he throws it aside and starts walking all over the place without assistance.

Recently he has also mastered waving, clapping and this: Noah's New Trick.  Whenever he hears people clapping now, he joins in.  It's the cutest thing ever.  Especially when we are at CrossFit and he joins in with cheering on the athletes.  He waves and says "bye-bye" which often sounds more like "ba-ba" but we're working on it! He can also do some wicked squats, is constantly opening and closing doors, drawers and cabinets, and is doing a lot more babbling.  It is so amazing to watch him learn and figure out new things every day.  Typically we only have to show him something once and he gets it.  He's also eating like a champ.  I swear this kid eats more than a 3 year old.  It's ridiculous!  He's willing to try anything and while there are definitely things he likes better than others, there really hasn't been anything we've found that he just refuses to eat...from bananas, pears and avocados, to broccoli, mushrooms and tofu...this boy loves to eat!  He is also obsessed with anything that has wheels.  Those are the toys he gravitates toward first, he loves watching cars and trucks drive by, and he loves pushing around his stroller.

He is also definitely a toddler!  He whines when he gets frustrated in completing a task.  He gets mad when he doesn't get his way.  He screams when you tell him, "No, you can not open the drawer and play with the sharp knives" or "No, you can not pull over the floor lamp onto the ground."  But for the most part he is a happy, giggly, busy little boy, and we are so thankful for and blessed by that.

I can't believe it's been almost a year since this sweet little boy entered our lives.  We thank God every day that we get to love this beautiful blessing and are humbled by the responsibility!  We are working on the details of a birthday party and will let you know (hopefully this week) once that all gets sorted out.  It will be on his actual birthday, so mark your calendars now for a celebration on August 25th!

I will leave you with this cuteness:
