About our blog

This blog began as an attempt to keep our family and friends included in the adventures of little Baby Blakely until he made his appearance in the world. Now, this has become a gathering place for all of our various adventures as we continue to enjoy time as a growing family.

Blurry 2 weeks

Many of you have asked whether or not the blog would continue now that our wonderful BB has been born. Although BB can now be known by his given name of Noah Benjamin, we will still continue to blog about the adventures of our little baby Blakely.

The past two weeks have been a bit of a blur as we work on figuring out this new normal in the aftermath of Noah's birth. It has been a whirlwind of feedings and diapers and family and friends and...well trying to get sleep in between everything. In everything, as you've come to expect, I have some observations based on some trends (conveniently organized by a topical statement):

  • "You should sleep when the baby is sleeping" OR "the perils of momsomnia" -  You would not believe how many times we've heard that we should sleep when the baby sleeps. I wish it were that easy! I seem to be suffering from a tragic case of "momsomnia" (it's a term, forget about the gender issues!). This is when you can't sleep because you are anticipating the next squeal, dirty diaper, or other issue to pop up. Couple this with the inevitable around the clock nature of parenting a newborn (which of course brings those interruptions) and you have a recipe for little sleep. Family has been immensely helpful in trying to give us breaks to catch up on sleep but at some point the Mrs. and I have to figure this whole thing out.
  • "He sticks the landing!" - It seems that precious Noah who sleeps all day as many of you visit to coo over his cuteness has a sixth sense for the hours of 11 pm and 3 am. He seems to figure out that this is prime time for mommy and daddy to get a little nap in and, consequently, decides to scream his little lungs out. The only thing that seems to settle the little jerk bundle of joy is being held (of course in a specific semi-vertical, bicep crushing position) while pacing around the room (using a specific bouncing motion which seems to have strained something in my right leg). This wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't for the fact that even if we manage to get him to sleep before my arms give out from muscle fatigue, he wakes up when we put him in the bassinet to repeat the process. Just once, I'd like to stick the dismount in the baby bedtime gymnastics.
  • "Oh come on!" - Baby Noah seems to also like to play a little trick on us in his nighttime routine. Personally, I think he has figured out his own special way to torture us. I think he's only pretending to be asleep as we put him in the bassinet so that he can lull us into a false sense of security. Then, we creep over to the bed so we can gently settle in to sleepy-by-land. As soon as little Beelzebub Noah hears our heads hit the pillows, he cues up the tornado siren crying.
  • "Adventures in poopy land" - You would not believe how much poop this little guy can create. His little digestive system is like a crowded store on Black Friday...one in, one out. With a two hour feeding cycle, we're constantly suiting up for our adventures in poopy land. Oh, and let me tell you, there is a special room in hell filled with the stench of week old diapers sitting in a trash can.
  • Noah farts, a lot...and loudly. No witty, topical statement needed. And yes, it's hysterical every time.
  • "Rubber ducky, you're the one!" - Today was Noah's first bath time. He loved his wash pod and seemed to enjoy the bathing process. How do I know? Well besides the fact that he didn't scream and cry throughout, he did what he always does when he gets excited...he puked all over himself (in the bath no less). Like father like son; I couldn't be more proud. And for the record, I'm also proud of my ability to get the bath water to exactly the right temperature for him. Just call me superdad.
Let's be honest, every second with this kid could be fodder for a blog post. We're simultaneously in awe with every little thing he does and also terrified that we're going to do something wrong. Every moment of every day could provide a vignette to unpack here. Stay tuned for more adventures!

  1. I read this out loud to your mother and had to stop several times because I was laughing so hard. Welcome to fatherhood. It gets better trust me. I'm a dad, I know.
